Word Problems (2 numbers)

1st Grade

Alabama Course of Study Standards: 1

Use addition and subtraction to solve word problems within 20 by using concrete objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
  1. Add to with change unknown to solve word problems within 20.
  2. Take from with change unknown to solve word problems within 20.
  3. Put together/take apart with addend unknown to solve word problems within 20.
  4. Compare quantities, with difference unknown, bigger unknown, and smaller unknown while solving word problems within 20.

Arizona Academic Standards: 1.OA.A.1

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems with unknowns in all positions (e.g., by using objects, drawings, and/or equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem). See Table 1

Common Core State Standards: 1.OA.A.1

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE): 1.NR.2.1

Use a variety of strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems within 20.

Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks: 1.OA.A.1

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations (number sentences) with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.5

North Carolina - Standard Course of Study: 1.OA.1

Represent and solve addition and subtraction word problems, within 20, with unknowns, by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, when solving:
  • Add to/Take from-Change Unknown
  • Put together/Take Apart-Addend Unknown
  • Compare-Difference Unknown

New York State Next Generation Learning Standards: 1.OA.1

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve one step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and/or comparing, with unknowns in all positions.
Note: Problems should be represented using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number. Problems should be solved using objects or drawings, and equations.

Ohio's Learning Standards: 1.OA.1

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. See Table 1, page 94.

Tennessee Academic Standards: 1.OA.A.1

Add and subtract within 20 to solve contextual problems, with unknowns in all positions, involving situations of add to, take from, put together/take apart, and compare. Use objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. (See Table 1 - Addition and Subtraction Situations)
