2nd Grade Writing - Silent Letters Lesson
Silent Letters
Many words are not spelled the way that they sound. Some words are even spelled with silent letters, which means that they are not heard when the word is pronounced. It is important to memorize the spellings of these words.
Silent W
Some words can be spelled with a silent w in the front, such as wreath.
Other words spelled with a silent w are wrong, writer, wrinkle, and wrestle.
Silent K
Some words can be spelled with a silent k, such as knife.
Other words spelled with a silent k are knock, knee, know, and knight.
Silent B
Some words are spelled with a silent b at the end, such as lamb.
Other words spelled with a silent b are crumb, thumb, bomb, and climb.
Silent GH
Some words are spelled with a silent gh, such as light.
Other words spelled with a silent gh are caught, high, dough, and fight.
It is important to recognize words that have silent letters and memorize their spellings. There are no spelling patterns that students can learn that will remind them which words have silent letters. Knowing how to spell these words correctly will just take practice.
